PHONE

Carter

My cell phone rang. I put the call on speaker when I saw that it was Paul so I could use my laptop while we talked.

“I got the copy of the police report. I looked at the picture of the dead bird the stalker sent.” Paul was crisp and straight to the point. “I have about 5 minutes until my next meeting. As quickly as possible, Brandon is flying out, because I’m signing something very soon. As soon as the deal is done and the lawyers are happy, I’m flying back to LA.”

“We haven’t found much yet about the stalker. I already sent you the report that my investigator compiled.” Kyle and I went way back in the military, and I knew Kyle knew my younger brother Wade. “Kyle is the best. He was the first person I’d contacted. Fortunately, he had the time to take on your daughter’s case.”

Paul grunted at me. “And the police know what’s going on?”

“Yes.”

“You’re normally more verbose than this,” Paul observed out loud.

I didn’t know what to say to him.

“You’ll catch the bastard,” Paul soothed, as if he thought that I was upset by not having caught the stalker already. I didn’t tell him that I’d been hooking up with Maya while Paul was in Paris. “I know that you’re the best man for the job. You never let yourself wallow in any emotional punches.”

I felt a giant lump of guilt weighing down my gut. I was not going to share any of my emotions with my boss right now.

I cleared my throat. “Sure. This might sound like a change of topic, but have you ever had Maya evaluated for dyslexia? My brother Wade has dyslexia.”

“Your brother who works for the Department of Defense? Maya is perfectly normal,” Paul shot back. I could hear the frown in his voice. “Are you saying that she’s not?”

Maya made a soft noise. I turned to see that she was standing there, not safely in the guesthouse as I thought she was. Her face had totally fallen.

“She’s perfectly normal,” I agreed. “I have to go. Something came up.”

“I have my meeting right now anyway. Tell me if anything new comes up.” Paul hung up the phone without saying goodbye.

“My dad thinks I’m some kind of defective freak.” Maya wiped away a tear from the corner of her eye. I could tell that she was trying not to cry by the quiver of her lips.

“Maya, he didn’t mean it that way. Paul just needs time to adapt and understand that you might have a learning disability.”

She was crying in earnest now, which made me feel helpless. I didn’t like it very much when women cried, due to some of my childhood memories. Reaching out to her, I pulled her into a hug. As I kissed her ear, I let her rest her head against my shoulder. I was going to hell, but I might as well enjoy the few moments we had together. We were going to get caught if we stayed in the main house, though.
